  • 1/2 cup chilled whipping crea
  • 8 tablespoons Frangelico (hazelnut liqueur)

Recipe Preparation

  • Using electric mixer, beat cream and sugar in small bowl to soft peaks. DO AHEAD Can be made 4 hours ahead. Cover and chill.

  • Pour 2 tablespoons Frangelico and 2 tablespoons Baileys liqueur into each of 4 mugs. Pour coffee over, dividing evenly. Top each with dollop of whipped cream and serve immediately.

THE Nutty Irishman Cocktail Recipe

Sooooo….remember the Nutty Irishman Cupcakes ? I made them several years ago and they were an instant hit! Well, some of you had never heard of their very enticing, very tempting cocktail inspiration. And being the problem solver that I am….I decided to share my version with you.

My newly created version, as far as cocktails go. I don’t make a ton of cocktails, actually…I’m more of a wine bottle cork popper. Sometimes I’ll make something I’ve had at a restaurant….like the most amazing Chocolate Martini on the planet….but for the most part I stick to the vino. It’s easy, there’s no mixing of the vino…pour and go. That’s about my speed.

Before I was old enough to drink cocktails, my family used to frequent a restaurant that was known for their after dinner coffee drinks. It was like a catalog…pages and pages of dreamy sounding cocktails that I would drool over when the adults would get their drinks. And the one that always stood out was the Nutty Irishman Coffee.

Piping hot, with a sweet and nutty aroma…the Nutty Irishman coffee was topped with a pile of luscious whipped cream and a light coating of sprinkles. It was a dream in a fancy coffee mug. Fast forward to adulthood and this upscale coffee cocktail was top of mind….all the time.

Frangelico shot-drink recipes

Shake ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Strain into a shot glass.

Pour ingredients in order listed into a shot glass.

Pour the Frangelico in first, then top off with the orange juice.

Pour equal parts of each ingredient into a shot glass. Suck on a lemon and shoot.

Shake ingredients together, strain into a shot glass, and serve.

Shake with ice and strain into shotglass. Enjoy!

Chill the ingredients, then mix in a highball glass and sprinkle some ground cinnamon on top if desired.

We have a little obsession here around the SheKnows offices, and it’s over a liqueur that’s gone overlooked for way too long. Remember that funny monk-shaped bottle in your grandma’s liquor cabinet? It’s Frangelico liqueur, and it’s hazelnut flavored, and it’s our favorite.

We jokingly call it “Grandma’s medicine” because that’s what our hypothetical grandma would have called it. But seriously? It’s so retro, it’s cool. Here’s just a few of the many ways you could work some hazelnut magic into your holiday drinks and eats.

1. With club soda on ice. This is our mix of choice in the office.

2. With tequila. Sweet Frangelico pairs beautifully with tequila or a smoky mezcal. Try a simple mix of 3 parts tequila with 1 part Frangelico, or check out these hazelnut-infused recipes.

3. With whiskey. The liqueur’s sweetness also makes it a good match for whiskey. I’ve been adding 1/2 an ounce to 1-1/2 ounces of rye in a Sambuca-rinsed glass for a twist on the Sazerac.

4. In your coffee. A bit of Frangelico with some cream and you’ll forget all about Bailey’s.

5. With sparkling wine. The monk makes a nice Champagne cocktail. Add a squeeze of lemon to balance the sweetness.

6. Better than sex. That’s the name of this concoction made with cream, Kahlúa and Grand Mariner.

7. Butter pecan. Mix with vanilla ice cream and pecans, and you’ve got one hell of a boozy, nutty milkshake.

8. Hazelnut martini. All you need is some vodka. We recommend rimming the glass with cocoa powder and crushed hazelnuts.

9. Three-layer chocolate cake. This is basically drinkable Nutella in a shot glass. You’re welcome.

10. Absolut Marocchini martini. Vodka, chocolate bitters and coffee for a hazelnut mocha-flavored martini.

11. Frangelico cider. Shake with whiskey and apple cider, add a dash of bitters.

12. Hot nun. Why should the monk have all the fun? Combine with honey, cloves, lemon peel and hot water and tell everyone you’re having your special “tea.”

14. Reindeer tracks. Chocolate vodka, Frangelico, créme de cacao, cream and crushed Oreo cookies? If you insist.

15. M&M’s cocktail. Combine Frangelico just with créme de cacao in a shot glass and it’s supposed to taste just like M&M’s candy. I think we’d better try this one out here at the office right away.

17. Sunset sour. Bourbon with Frangelico, lemon juice and egg whites &mdash yes to this, though we would skip the original recipe’s simple syrup.

18. Frangelico mudslide. This boozy, chocolaty milkshake is as decadent as it gets. Did we mention it includes Nutella?

19. Eggnog martini. You knew this was coming &mdash of course Frangelico is perfect with eggnog.

20. Neat. Before you try any of these recipes, take a sip or two of Frangelico on its own. That will give you an idea of how you think you’ll like yours. Also, it’s fun.

3 Cocktails to Make With Frangelico

If you don&apost know Frangelico as a hazelnut liqueur, odds are you know it as "that weird-ass bottle that kinda looks like a monk." Though it was only released in the &apos80s, the Italian-made liqueur has one of those elaborate backstories: monks in the Piedmont region had been making something similar to Frangelico for centuries, inspiring its particular blend of hazelnut, vanilla and cocoa flavors.

Regardless of the true origin, Frangelico can be fun to experiment with in cocktails. Like many nutty, low-proof liqueurs, it&aposs quite sweet𠅋ut when you balance it out with more potent spirits, the sugar gets tempered a bit, and its pleasant hazelnut flavors come out. These drinks will taste a bit dessert-y, but it&aposs a still-plenty-boozy sort of dessert.

Easy: Frangelico & Cider

Nuts and apples are a classic flavor pairing, and this cocktail combines fresh apple cider with nutty Frangelico and plenty of American whiskey to amp it up. This is how we like our Frangelico: as a pleasant hazelnut background, not an overwhelming sweet liqueur hit.

Instructions: In a cocktail shaker with ice, combine 2 ounces of Jack Daniel&aposs, 3 ounces of apple cider, 3/4 ounce Frangelico and 1/4 ounce of honey syrup (equal parts honey and hot water). Add a dash of Angostura bitters. Shake that all up and strain into a tall glass with fresh ice. Garnish with a large cinnamon stick.

Intermediate: Frangelico Sour

Like its cousin the Amaretto Sour, a Frangelico Sour can be quite tasty if made right. What this means is that you should always use fresh lemon juice and sugar instead of sour mix. You should also add an egg white, which gives a classic sour its light, airy texture. We also chose to cut Frangelico with bourbon, so you can still appreciate those hazelnut flavors without them taking over.

Instructions: In a cocktail shaker without ice, combine 1 ounce of bourbon, 1 ounce of Frangelico, 3/4 ounce lemon juice, 3/4 ounce simple syrup (equal parts sugar and hot water) and a dash of Angostura. Add one egg white. Shake all that up hard without ice—this is called a "dry shake"𠅊nd then add ice and shake again (the "wet shake”). Strain into a rocks glass with fresh ice. Garnish with a lemon wheel and brandied cherries.

Advanced: Irish Hazelnut Cream

Most creamy dessert drinks are sweet to the point that you can barely make it through even one. That’s why for our creamy drink we’re going with zero added sugar. The Irish whiskey, Frangelico and whipped cream make a pleasantly creamy drink that doesn’t in any way resemble a Frappuccino.

Instructions: Combine 2 ounces of Irish whiskey (like Jameson Black Barrel) and 1 ounce of Frangelico in a mixing glass with ice and stir. Pour into a cocktail glass.

Now, we&aposre going to make a loose whipped cream—less stiff and form-holding than the texture of a fully whipped cream, the kind you&aposd top dessert with. You can do this with a whisk or a hand beater, or try this nifty bartender trick: If you&aposve got a Hawthorne strainer—the kind you use to strain cocktails, with a spring around the edge—take out that big spring. Drop it into a cocktail shaker. Add an ounce of heavy cream, and then shake all that up hard. The spring will help "whip" the cream to just the texture you want (watch expert mixologist Jim Meehan’s tutorial here).

Once you&aposve got whipped cream, carefully float it over the top of your cocktail. Garnish with fresh grated nutmeg.
